Are there air filters or purifiers to kill the coronavirus?
The constant news coverage of the COVID-19 Coronavirus has generated a lot of questions about home air conditioning systems and clean indoor air. The questions vary but usually go something like this.
Are there air filters or air purifiers for your home that can guarantee to kill the CoronaVirus?
The short answer is NO. There are no residential products that can truthfully state that they will kill the COVID-19 virus. If that’s all you need to know, that’s your answer. But since there are distinct health advantages of clean indoor air you may want to keep reading.
You see, we’ve known for years that the combination of a good air filter and UV Air Scrubber can reduce exposure to common bacteria and viruses while protecting against allergy and asthma triggering contaminants. It can also remove VOCs and significantly reduce dust particles and odors. Those things we know. But what we don’t know is if either of those products would be effective against the Coronavirus. They haven’t been tested and until they are tested there’s just no way of telling.
There are number of ways to reduce the risk of Coronavirus that have been proven. Things recommended by the CDC like social distancing, washing your hands frequently, and being careful about touching your face have been shown to be effective. Often it’s the simple commonsense things that work. So let’s make sure we do those.
