Leak Detection

You’re worried you have a leak somewhere in your house, but you don’t know where the water’s coming from. That’s where we come in!

What Is Plumbing Leak Detection?

When you suspect your home has a leak (whether it’s from a pipe or from an appliance like your toilet or shower), it’s a good idea to call a professional plumbing company out for leak detection services. This is when a plumber comes out to your home to figure out if your problem really is a leak, where exactly the leak is, and how we can fix the problem for you. Leak detection isn’t really something you can DIY, so if you think you might have a leak in your home or yard, call or text Morris-Jenkins sooner rather than later! Leaks might seem small, but they can do a lot of damage before you know it. And sometimes, you won’t even be able to spot the signs until damage has already been done.

How to Tell You Need Leak Detection Services

Sometimes, the signs of a leak are obvious, but not always. If you have a leak in your plumbing, you might have all of these signs, but you also might only have one. If you even think you might have a leak, it’s best to play it safe and call us out to take a look!

Be on the lookout for:

Wet or Lush Spots in Your Yard

Is one area of your lawn looking extra healthy and green? While it’s always nice to see your yard thriving, one random lush patch isn’t necessarily a good sign. If you have wet or lush spots in your yard, it might be because a pipe underground is leaking. The grass might love the extra water, but we definitely wanna get that fixed ASAP!

Mold or Water Damage in House

Mold or water damage in your house is definitely a harder sign to ignore! If you notice staining on your walls, ceiling, or carpet, don’t ignore it! If you don’t already have mold from a leak, leaving a leak untreated won’t just cause MORE water damage, but mold could eventually develop and put the health of your family at risk.

High Water Bills

It’s normal to have some months with a slightly higher water bill, but if you suddenly find yourself paying a lot more than usual, that’s a sign of a leak! You may not have any physical signs of a leak anywhere in your house or yard, but the one thing you can count on spotting is a change in your water bill. If your home relies on city water, the city might call you to let you know you might have a leak. If you use well water, it’s a little trickier to catch a leak this way. You could have an increase in your electric bill because your home uses electricity to power your well pump to get water. Because leaks are harder to detect when you have well water, we recommend installing a pump protection system. It’s an electric monitor for your pump so you know when something isn’t right!

How Does Plumbing Leak Detection Work?

Plumbing leak detection is a tricky process. Oftentimes, you’ll notice a high water bill or other signs of leaks, but you’ll have no idea where it’s coming from. That’s where we come in! We have some tricks up our sleeve to figure out where the problem is. Our goal is to get as close to the leak itself so we can be as minimally invasive as possible when we repair your pipes. If we have to cut concrete or drywall, we want to cut away as little as possible to preserve your home. That’s why we don’t skip steps and we take the time to find the source of your water problems!

High-Powered Microphone

This way of detecting leaks is actually really cool!

When you have a leak somewhere that’s hard to physically get to (like one in your wall, slab, or out in your yard), our plumbing experts will use a high-powered microphone. We aren’t just talking about your everyday microphone. This thing is so powerful that it can pick up a conversation from down the street! That’s why, when we’re out for a leak detecting appointment, you’ll need to be mindful of making noise in the house while we’re using the microphone. It will pick up every sound from you, your kids, your dog, etc. and make it too hard for us to hear where the leak is coming from.

If the leak is small, we’ll use an air compressor to pressurize your pipes. The pressurized air will want to escape from the pinhole leak, and that can make a squealing noise. Our microphone will help us find exactly where that little squealing noise comes from so we can find even the trickiest little leaks!

Dye Tablets

You might think a leaky toilet would be pretty obvious, but they can actually be tricky to spot sometimes. You may not have any obvious signs of a leak aside from a high water bill. If we suspect the leak might be coming from your toilet, we’ll use dye tablets in the toilet tank to see if any color shows up in the bowl. If that turns out to be the source of the leak, we can talk to you about options to get your bathroom back to normal! If that’s not where the water is coming from, we’ll keep looking!

How to Prevent Leaks in Your Home

We make it easier than ever to prevent leaks in your home! We can install a flood protection system into your plumbing. This will monitor your home for even little pinhole leaks! It measures the pressure and flow of your water. If water pressure changes or if the water flows for longer than a set amount of time, it’ll notify you that something might be wrong with your plumbing. Because the system connects to the internet, it can send you notifications about the health of your plumbing!

To make things even easier, you can set Morris-Jenkins as an account manager of your system. That way, we get notifications if you have a leak, too. If you’re out of town or if that’s your vacation home, we can still get out there to take care of things before there’s any water damage.
