Signs You Need a New Water Heater

There are a few key signs it’s time for a water heater replacement

  • Your water heater is more than 15 years old: Most tank-style water heaters have a lifespan of 15 to 20 years. So if yours is coming up on that 15 or 20-year mark, it might be time to replace it.
  • You notice brown or rusty water: If your hot water has a brown or rusty tint to it, it’s a sign that your water heater is deteriorating from the inside. Without replacement, your water heater will eventually fail or burst, causing expensive water damage to your home.
  • Your energy bills are increasing: If your energy bills are going up but your water usage is staying the same, it likely means that your water heater is losing efficiency. This can be a result of old age, leaks, or other damage that requires replacement.
  • The tank leaks: A crack or leak in the tank is pretty much a death sentence for your water heater. If you discover a leak, contact us as soon as possible to get your water heater replaced. If you’re looking to switch things up, we also offer tankless water heater installations.

How Your Water Heater Installation Works

Step 1: Schedule your appointment.
Call us at (704) 357-0484 or contact us online (we’ll get back to you ASAP) to schedule an appointment day and time that works for you. You’ll get a confirmation email, and once we’re on the way, you’ll get a picture of your plumber so you know who’s coming to your home.

Step 2: Choose your water heater.
Feeling overwhelmed by all the options? Gas or electric, 30-gallon or 50-gallon, tank or tankless… It’s a lot to think about! When you’re not sure what new water heater is right for your family, there’s no need to panic. Your plumber LOVES nerding out on water heaters—it’s what we’re passionate about! Your plumber will ask you questions about your hot water usage and preferences so we can get an idea what’s best for your home and your family. We’ll narrow down the options and tell you the ones we think you’ll like best. From there, you can ask any questions and pick your new water heater. We’ll take it from there!

Step 3: Sit back and relax! We’ll get your new water heater installed. It’s best to leave this kind of install job to the pros (we’ve been doing this for a long time). Your water heater should be installed and ready to use either the same day or the next. We’ll make sure everything is done the right way, with no shortcuts. Once it’s all set, it should last your family for years! We also offer water heater services like water heater flushes to keep yours healthy and happy for a long time.

Step 4: Tell us how we did.
We want to hear what you think. After your installation, we’ll make sure you have the chance to talk with us about your service.

Let’s Simplify These Water Heater Terms

Feeling confused and overwhelmed? Don’t worry! You don’t need to know any of these terms. Your plumber will be there to answer any questions and break things down in a way that’s easy to understand.

  • First-hour rating (FHR): This is the number of gallons of hot water a full tank can provide in an hour. You’ll want a tank with an FHR that’s within one to three gallons of your peak demand (how many gallons of hot water your family uses at the busiest hour of the day).
  • Energy factor (EF): Water heater energy efficiency is measured by its energy factor — also called a “thermal energy factor” — which is the amount of hot water produced per unit of fuel consumed in a typical day. Most tank-style water heaters have an EF rating of 0.67 to 0.90.
  • Expansion tank: This small tank attaches to your water heater. When it’s heating water, the water expands and puts a lot of pressure on your tank. The expansion tank exists to collect the extra water, relieving your water heater tank of pressure and preventing it from bursting prematurely. Most North Carolina city codes require an expansion tank, especially if you have a “closed system” that has a backflow prevention device.
