What Is a Whole-Home Surge Protector?

Have you ever bought a surge protector for your computer?

A whole-home surge protector is a lot like that, but MUCH more powerful. And like the name says, it’s for your whole home! We install this right on your electrical panel so it protects everything in your home from surges.

What Do Whole-Home Surge Protectors Do?

Whole-home surge protectors take electrical spikes and redirect the surges away from your devices to keep them safe. Even if a surge isn’t enough to kill any of your devices, it will start to wear away at them. Think about it like a car that never gets its oil changed. Sure, you can keep driving for a while, but ultimately, it’s gonna shorten the life of the car. Surge protectors keep your devices and appliances safe from electrical surges that may not immediately fry them but will shorten their lifespans.

If you don’t have a whole-home surge protector, you’re putting every piece of electrical equipment in your home at risk. Think about how much your fridge costs, your TVs, your washer and dryer, any gaming systems you have, and even medical equipment. Are you prepared to have all of that replaced if your home experiences a big electrical surge? Sure, you may have insurance that will cover those things, but no one likes dealing with insurance companies. Avoid the entire hassle and all that anxiety by having Morris-Jenkins come out and install a whole-home surge protector!

Do I Need a Whole-Home Surge Protector?

Everyone could benefit from a whole-home surge protector! If you’ve lived in the Carolinas for a while, you know how crazy some of our summer storms can get. All it takes is one bad surge from a storm (or from things like people driving into electrical poles) to ruin your electronic devices. Even small surges (like when the lights go out for just a moment) can wear on the life expectancy of devices and appliances in your home.

Starting in 2025, all new construction homes are gonna start requiring whole-home surge protectors. They’re truly important to the well-being of your home and its appliances! So, while you aren’t required to have one in a home built before 2025, we definitely recommend it.

What to Expect When Morris-Jenkins Installs a Whole-Home Surge Protector

When you have Morris-Jenkins out to install a whole-home surge protector in your home, your electrician will take a look at your electrical panel to figure out the best way to install it. This kind of project is something we modify and tailor to make it perfect for your home specifically! In some cases, we will even install the box into the drywall beneath your electrical panel so everything sits flush with the wall and looks clean.

Most of the time, we can complete your whole-home surge protector installation within an hour or less. Your electrician will take care of everything during this install, so you’ll be ready to immediately have the benefits from your surge protector!

When we decided to offer this product, we did a LOT of research to find the very best choice possible—the one we’d want in our own homes. Not only are the surge protectors we install the best around, but they have the best warranty, too!*

Do Whole-Home Surge Protectors Go Bad?

Technically, your whole-home surge protector could last forever. However, just like any piece of equipment, they can die. The only way your whole-home surge protector will stop protecting your devices would be if it faults. How do you know if your whole-home surge protector faults? Easy! When you go to look at it by your electrical panel, you’ll notice the green light has gone off and it’s making an audible sound. That’s the sign it’s time to call Morris-Jenkins out to take a look.

I Have a Surge Protector at My Outdoor HVAC Unit. What’s the Difference?

If you’ve had Morris-Jenkins or another company install a surge protector at your outdoor HVAC unit, that surge protector is made to protect the motors. It doesn’t protect all the other devices and appliances in your home from electrical surges. So, while these compressor surge protectors are great, they aren’t gonna do much for the rest of your home. If you decide you want a whole-home surge protector, you can still keep the surge protector for your air conditioner. In fact, it just doubles the protection for your heating and cooling system in the event of power surges!
