If you’re on city water, the water that comes out of your taps has a long journey from where it’s treated to your home. Thankfully, most of the icky things that you don’t want in your water, like bacteria and parasites, are killed off before the water even makes its way to your house. But a lot can happen to your water before it gets there. You can end up with higher amounts of chemicals and minerals than you’re comfortable with. The levels aren’t always toxic, but they could have an effect on your plumbing, your fixtures, and even on your skin and hair.
A good time to schedule residential water quality testing with us is when you notice buildup on your fixtures, you don’t like the taste of your water, it smells too much like chlorine, or you’re getting stains on your clothes.
There are a few things we test for with our basic water quality testing services:
Chlorine
Did you know that too much chlorine in your water could be affecting your health even if you aren’t drinking the water? Chlorine has a much lower boiling point than water, which means it can get into the air during your shower even when the water isn’t boiling hot. When you breathe steam that has a lot of chlorine in it, you could end up with respiratory problems or other health issues. Chlorine is one of the main things we test for with our home water quality testing.
Minerals
Another crucial part of residential water quality tests is looking for the amounts of minerals you have in the water. Minerals like iron, calcium, and magnesium are all things that your body needs, so they aren’t toxic in small amounts. But if there is too much in the water, the minerals can dry out your hair and skin, and they can cause stains on your clothes and fixtures. The white build-up that’s so difficult to remove from your faucets is caused by hard water.
High or Low pH
You may remember hearing the terms “acidic” and “alkaline” while you were in school. These are just fancy words that describe the pH of something. If something has a low pH, it’s more acidic. Think of vinegar and lemons. If it has a high pH, it’s more alkaline, like baking soda and soap. You don’t want your water to be too far on either side. A low pH can taste sour and be bad for your pipes. A high pH might cause more buildup on your plumbing. We’ll test it to see where your water lands on the pH scale with our home water quality testing.
The last stage of our residential water quality testing is fixing your water. Once you get your test results back, we’ll help you take the next steps. It may be that nothing needs to be done. But if the pH is off, there is too much chlorine, or you have hard water, we can get your water where it needs to be. We’ll make a plan and then get the job done. You may have to install a filter, a water softener, or a pump to improve the quality of your water.
