When your garbage disposal is working, you won’t talk about it very often. But if you find yourself wondering about the funny noise your disposal is making, it’s probably time to give it some attention. There are a few common problems you’ll notice after you’ve had your garbage disposal for a while:
Clogs: Garbage disposals aren’t made to grind up everything. They can’t handle things that are too hard or too stringy. And they definitely can’t handle things that aren’t food! When something ends up in the disposal that it can’t grind up, or when too much goes down at once, it can clog up your whole sink. It can even stop your dishwasher from draining.
Jams: You might enjoy hearing a musician jam out on their instrument. But when your garbage disposal jams, it’s not a lot of fun. Sometimes, hard items can jam up the blades and cause them to stop turning. Stringy items can also wind around the blades and keep them from turning.
Dead garbage disposal: If you flip the switch on your garbage disposal and you don’t hear anything except the sound of your own frustration, you may have a garbage disposal that doesn’t work anymore.
