Signs your gas pack needs to be repaired

Wondering if your gas pack (also called a package unit) is calling for help? Look out for these signs:

• It won’t turn on. If your gas pack isn’t turning on at all, it could be a number of things, like a tripped circuit breaker or a thermostat issue. If your breaker keeps tripping, DON’T keep turning it back on! You could overload your electrical panel and end up with an even bigger problem.
• It has weak airflow. If you don’t feel much air coming from the vents in your home, it could be an issue with your gas pack’s fan belt or motor.
• It’s making weird noises. Any strange sounds like banging or scraping is a sign your gas pack needs repairs!
• It turns on and off a lot. Your gas pack should run slow and steady. If it’s turning on and off a lot, that’s not normal! You could have airflow problems, something could be wrong with the thermostat, or maybe the unit isn’t the right size for your home.
• It’s blowing cool air. If you’re trying to heat your home and your gas pack is blowing out cool air, there might be something wrong with your thermocouple or pilot light.

Is your gas pack blowing cold air?

There are some common problems that might be causing your package unit to blow cold air. Here are a few things you can try yourself before calling us out!

1. Is your thermostat set to “COOL”?

Make sure the switch is set to “HEAT”. While this might sound obvious, it’s something that gets overlooked a lot!

2. Is the air filter dirty?

You should be changing your air filters every 30-60 days. Your filters don’t just keep the air clean for you, they keep the air clean for your gas pack! If your filters are clogged, they can restrict airflow to your gas pack, causing a lot of problems. If yours are dirty, replace them with new ones.

3. Did the pilot light go out?

If your gas pack is older, it likely uses a permanently lit pilot light to heat your home. If that light is out, you can just relight it! If it keeps going out, that’s a sign there’s a bigger problem at play and it’s time for a professional to take a look at it.

4. Is the gas off?

Your gas pack can’t heat your home without a supply of gas! Make sure the gas valve lever is in the “ON” position (parallel to the gas supply pipe).
