But you may be wondering if there’s an easy way to get it done. At Morris-Jenkins, we offer water quality testing in Davidson to check for some of the most important things. Whether you have well water or you’re on city water, a lot can end up in your tap water. While most of these things are generally harmless, they can be a nuisance, wreaking havoc on your plumbing over time.
Water quality testing is important if you start noticing problems with your water. Some of the most common problems are bad-tasting water, scale build-up, water that stains clothing, and water that’s hard on your pipes.
We recommend having your water tested right away if it tastes sour or bitter, or if it has a bad smell. You should also get it tested if it’s causing skin irritation or putting water spots on your fixtures.
Our basic test is free with any plumbing diagnostic and you’ll get your results back right away. We can also test for more than 100 other things in your water. While the other test isn’t free, it’ll cover all the bases if you need more comprehensive testing. With this test, we’ll take a sample of your water and then ship it off to a lab. You’ll get the results a few days later.
If the basic test sounds good to you, you may wanna know what it tests for! We’re looking for three different things with this test:
Minerals
Minerals are important! Our bodies need iron, calcium, and magnesium to thrive. But does that mean we need buckets of them in our tap water? Not necessarily. Too many minerals in the water can irritate our skin, stain our clothes, and dry out our hair. Our basic tests check for high levels of these minerals that might be the cause of all of your scale build-up woes.
pH
Minerals aren’t the only things that can clog up your pipes with build-up. A high pH can be the cause of scale, too, and it can make your water taste bitter. On the other hand, a low pH can cause your acidic water to eat away at the pipes. We’ll check to see if the pH of your water is balanced.
Chlorine Levels
Maybe one of the more serious things our basic test checks for is high chlorine levels. Chlorine is a toxic chemical, and while it’s great at getting rid of some of the nastier things that can end up in the water, it’s also great at causing skin rashes, lung irritation, and red, watery eyes. If that’s what you’re experiencing after every shower, it’s time to get your water tested!
Remember, chlorine isn’t just harmful when you drink it. It has a low boiling point, so it’s in the steam of your shower. Breathing that stuff in isn’t great for your lungs, and you don’t want it soaking into your pores, either.
So, what should you do if your water’s pH is too high or too low? Or what can be done if you find out your tap water has the chlorine levels of a public swimming pool? There are plenty of steps you can take! There are whole-house filters, water softeners, and other solutions for balancing pH, getting rid of the chlorine, and filtering out some of those minerals.
