Morris-Jenkins Renovates and Reopens Levine Children’s Hospital Rooftop Playground

Hospital stays are scary, especially for kids! Levine Children’s Hospital has had a rooftop playground for years, but overtime, it’s just gotten a bit too loved. It really needed renovation, and maybe even some reimagining. At Morris-Jenkins, we’re always looking for new ways to help the children’s hospital, and this seemed like the perfect opportunity!

Why the Rooftop Playground?

Since 2008, Morris-Jenkins has focused most of our fundraising efforts toward the “Child Life” initiatives at Levine Children’s Hospital. The Child Life specialists work to help children feel safer and supported while in the hospital! This might look like using dolls and preparation books to explain treatment, offering emotional distraction during medical procedures, giving them play and art activities, and even helping children discover ways to cope with illness.

Because our focus has been on making hospital stays less scary for kids, revamping the rooftop playground felt like the perfect project for us!

The Process

At the end of 2021, we started raising money to revamp the rooftop playground. Employees at Morris-Jenkins worked together to raise the money through our annual golf tournament, raffles, and more. And with the help of our vendors, we finally reached our goal!

While fundraising, we worked with builders to design and bring the playground to life! We were involved from start to finish. The new playground was designed to look like a little town, with a built-in bicycle and car track, interactive elements, and even parts that could be used in a child’s physical therapy work! Not only did we completely redo the rooftop playground to be a safe and fun space for children and their families, but we upgraded the indoor part of the floor. This includes a space for parents to go when they need a place to get work done while at the hospital.

Opening the Rooftop Playground

As of September 2025, the playground is open again for kids to get some fresh air and just feel like kids again! It has brand new flooring, play equipment, greenery, and more. This was an extra special experience for us here at Morris-Jenkins because we were able to be so involved in the design of the new space. A lot of our employees have had experience with their own children receiving treatment at Levine Children’s Hospital, plus we’ve been

partners with them for a long time. LCH and the families in it mean a LOT to us! We got to make sure the playground would not only look good but would be fun for kids and restful for their parents!

Future Projects

Shortly after completing the rooftop playground, we jumped into our next fundraising goal: Creating a mobile NICU! We completed funding for this in 2026—not long after opening the rooftop playground. This mobile NICU allows medical staff at Levine’s to meet the needs of families at home, giving parents of newborns the ability to leave the hospital sooner.

We’re so excited to see what other projects we can take care of for Levine Children’s Hospital, and we’re so grateful for the opportunities to make a difference in so many lives!
